This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
